“First we feel. Then we fall.” ― James Joyce,
Dubliner Emer Martin is an internationally recognized artist and writer, currently living in Redwood City. Emer’s large paintings use excerpts from text from the last pages of Finnegans Wake that address the tensions between Lucia Joyce and her father, and Lucia and her world “where the river loses itself in the sea.”
Emer’s paintings were influenced by Lucia Joyce: To Dance in the Wake, by Carol Loeb Shloss – a ground breaking work that shows the extraordinary influence that James Joyce’s daughter Lucia exercised on her father’s emotions and work. “This is a story that was not supposed to be told”, writes Stanford scholar Shloss, who transforms Lucia from the “mad daughter”, and a footnote in her father’s life, to a creative kindred spirit.
