Sunday, October 9th, 12.30pm – Los Gatos Library – free
How to hook and keep your reader’s attention is the aim of every writer. The first two pages are vital whether you are writing short stories, novels or creative non-fiction. At the end of this workshop you will know the 26 essential elements to include in the first two pages in order to make your writing attractive to readers and publishers. The workshop will include exercises to help you find your voice and turn boring facts into gripping fiction. Led by poet and playwright Caroline Bracken, you will learn how to use poetry and drama to bring your prose to a higher level and become a better editor of your own work.
This workshop is most suitable for writers who have been writing for a while but have not necessarily been published. If they wish, participants will be invited to submit up to 500 words of their writing in advance of the workshop and Caroline will give individual feedback to each writer.
Caroline Bracken’s poems have been widely published including in The Irish Times Hennessy New Irish Writing (2016), Skylight 47, The Clare Champion, The WOW Anthology and The Gathering Poem. She won the iYeats International Poetry Competition (2015) and the Writing.ie/Anam Cara International Poetry Competition (2013). Other poems have been shortlisted in competitions such as the Bridport (UK) and Listowel. She has been nominated for a 2016 Forward Prize in the Best Single Poem Category. Caroline also writes plays which have been staged at various venues around Ireland. She was recently selected by Words Ireland for a Mentorship Scheme and was awarded a bursary to attend the John Hewitt Summer School in 2015.
